When Peluché disbanded, both Amy and Sophie found themselves in a creative drought. “We had both stopped playing instruments,” says Sophie. “Eventually we began pondering making music again and when discussing the situation with Amy's mum, she told us to ‘never forget you are free’. This really stuck with us as a reminder to create and follow our joy through any challenges that come our way,” she continues.
Never Forget You Are Free was written and recorded in 2021 and the record’s songs were influenced by the emotions the pair felt whilst in isolation during the COVID 19 pandemic. “We jammed with our masks as soon as we were allowed out of isolation. We didn’t want the pandemic to stop us, so we formed a little creative support bubble,” says Amy. Once the pair were reunited, ideas really began to flow. “Every time we met we made another two songs, we were like an open tap for creation! We had to tell ourselves to slow down or we would never get the chance to record them all. We must have about 50 iphone recordings of jams from that time,” she says.
Citing inspirations as diverse as Tony Allen, Nuyorican Soul, Mariah Carey, 90s RnB, garage and jungle, in their new project It Was All A Dream have made room for musical exploration. “We loved recording with Toby from Pozi. He has a unique perception of sound and melody that always encourages the best takes from us,” says Sophie.
Covering themes of healing, connection, respect and friendship, the record was heavily influenced by the pair’s work in mental health and advocacy. The six songs that make up their debut EP are a breath of fresh air. They serve as a gentle reminder to take control of what is yours. They are the sound of anticipation and adventures, of re-discovering your self-worth and the excitement sharing that with the world.
